ABQ Secular Homeschool Collaborative
CULTURE STUDIES
with Nona Carter
AGES 7-12
This class will include hands-on activities to teach students about a different culture each week. It will be a fun, light-hearted class, with a short 10-15 minute lecture and looking at pictures, followed by an activity. When I've taught the class in the past, some of the activities included making wire toys like children in Nigeria, singing Santa Lucia in a parade and eating sweet bread in the Swedish tradition, and practicing calligraphy like a Japanese monk, to name just a few. Food is an important part of culture and enjoying foods from other countries helps students appreciate diversity of lifestyles. So please be aware that I will be sharing food with students, and that I will pass the foods by parents for approval before doing so. There could be field trips if I can find cultural events happening in Albuquerque that relate to the countries we learn about.
