Join us for an exciting year of learning about people who have made a difference in our world. We will learn about a diverse group of people - some historical, some still living - who made a profound impact; scientists, artists, inventors, activists, and more. We will also be sure to mention the not-so-famous people (those who didn’t always make it into the history books, but did big things too!) The class will be structured where we will study one person (or a group of similar people) each week through teacher lecture. The other half of the class period will be filled with hands-on projects that will help solidify what we learned. These projects might include: making a newspaper article about that person, conducting a science experiment, or making an art piece.
We will also include time for trivia questions, review of previously learned material, and marking maps. Two times per semester, we will spend class time doing group research projects. Teachers will bring in books and materials on various famous people and students will work in groups to find information about them. At the end of the year party in May, we will present a “Living Museum.” Students will spend time at home researching a person of their choosing, put together a costume and any props, and have a speech ready to present to anyone who comes to our “museum.”
Skills required:
Fluent reading and writing is helpful for research and some of the in-class projects, but we can make accommodations for students who may not have these skills yet.
Homework:
A small amount of homework will be given each week to reinforce the material learned in class. This is a great class for students to get used to having a co-op class with a little bit of homework.
Living Museum research project will be expected to be done at home and be finished by the last class of the year in May.
Some optional class movie nights will be planned when we learn about a person who has a movie or documentary that goes well with them.
Lecture time:
15 - 20 minutes
