BIOLOGY
with HILARY SHUERT
AGES 13+
The course will cover a wide range of topics, including cellular biology, genetics, evolution, ecology, and the anatomy and physiology of plants and animals. Students learn about the structure and function of cells, DNA and inheritance patterns, natural selection, ecosystems, and the diversity of life. Emphasis will be placed on critical thinking, scientific inquiry, and understanding how biology relates to real-world issues such as health, the environment, and biotechnology The class will include laboratory experiments, dissections(we will utilize store-bought kits vs actual animals), and projects to help students understand biological concepts through hands-on activities. Weekly reading/youtube videos will be required as well as meet ups during breaks. A pass/fail grade will be given if requested.
Required skills:
Students should be able to read, write, cut, color, and follow directions independently. Note taking will be helpful. Students should be engaged in class lectures and be comfortable working together when necessary.
Homework:
Students should expect to complete 1-2hours of homework each week. YouTube videos and reading will make up the majority of required work. Students will have a semi-final and final project & presentation due at the end of each semester. During the winter break, we will continue to meet in-person and via zoom. Some labs may also take place outside of Wednesdays.
Lecture time:
Lectures will be 10-30 minutes depending on planned activities.
